Literature

Stories that matter

The literature selected for Club FBS Young Brothers is all written by African Diaspora writers. Club FBS seeks to increase the literacy rates of all of its members, as only 30% of Black male students in the State of California read at grade level. Through culturally-relevant literature and choosing books our Young Brothers will enjoy reading, Club FBS is looking to change that stat.

Curation

How we choose

Books are chosen based on cultural relevance, historical impact, entertainment value, diverse experiences and complex themes. Each book is written by an author from the African Diaspora with a focus on books missing from the middle and high school literary canons.

Chosen with purpose

Each book is selected to meet Young Brothers where they are and keep them engaged. Stories that feel relevant and keep you turning the page.

Stories that expand perspective

From identity and discipline to challenge and growth, these stories broaden how Young Brothers see themselves and the world, and spark meaningful conversation.

Built for connection and growth

We read together. We talk it through. Over time, confidence grows, reading becomes a habit, and community takes shape.
