OUR BOOKS

The literature selected for Club FBS Young Brothers are all written by African Diaspora writers. Club FBS seeks to increase the literacy rates of all of its members as only 30% of Black male students in the State of California read at grade level. Through culturally-relevant literature and choosing books our Young Brothers will enjoy reading, Club FBS is looking to change that stat. 

The Will To Change

In The Will to Change, bell hooks provides a compassionate guide for men of all ages and identities to understand how to be in touch with their feelings, and how to express versus repress the emotions that are a fundamental part of who we are.

Mamba Mentality

The Mamba Mentality is a look inside the life and career of the late Kobe Bryant. But more than anything, it tackles how he built and maintained his legendary mentality and used it to become great.

Slam!

Slam provides a gritty look into the constant battle between the student and the athlete through the lens of a Black male teenager struggling to balance both.

The Nickel Boys

The Nickel Boys takes a fictional look inside the actual tragedy of Florida’s Dozier School for Boys. The devastating story of how a boys home built for rehabilitation became a house of horrors and death for the boys who lived there.

Between The World And Me

Between the World & Me is a modern-day classic written by one of the truly great writers of this century, Ta-Nehisi Coates. Coates paints a picture of a young Black man living in America through autobiographical letters to his son.

Forged By Fire

Forged by Fire is a story about the resilience of children in the face of abuse and neglect. It follows the story of the protagonist Gerald, and his sister Angel, as they navigate through the abuse that their mother, Monique, and their stepfather Jordan inflict on them.

Letters To A Young Brother

Letters to a Young Brother provides life lessons and discussions around a variety of topics pertaining to life as a young Black man through a series of letters to the reader.

Cry Like A Man

Cry Like A Man is a must-read. A memoir of Jason Wilson’s life beginning in Detroit, it is a powerful, magical, inspiring journey of a man in search of emotional safety.
